What a small-business website needs to turn visitors into calls
Most trade and clinic websites are brochures. Here's the short list of things that make a site produce enquiries, and the things that quietly kill them.
A website has one job for a small business: turn someone who's looking into someone who's calling. Most sites we audit do the opposite. They look fine, they say a lot, and the phone number is three clicks away. Here's what actually converts, in the order it matters.
The first screen
On a phone, before anyone scrolls, three things need to be true: it's obvious what you do, it's obvious where you do it, and the phone number is one tap away. "Blocked drain? Fixed today in Joondalup" with a call button does more than any amount of "welcome to our website".
Proof, immediately
Your Google rating and review count, right under the headline. A line like "4.9 from 212 reviews" removes most of the hesitation a stranger feels. If you have licence numbers, insurance, or an industry membership, put them in the footer of every page.
One page per service, one per area
A single "Services" page listing everything you do ranks for nothing. A page for each service, with real prices or price ranges and a photo of the job, ranks for that service. A page for each main suburb you serve ranks for "plumber [suburb]". This is where most of your search traffic will come from and most sites don't have it.
Speed
A site that takes four seconds to load on a phone loses about half its visitors before it appears. Big hero videos, slider plugins and page builders are the usual culprits. Every site we build loads in under a second on a mobile connection, because that's the single cheapest ranking and conversion win there is.
The things that quietly kill enquiries
- Contact forms with eight fields. Name, phone, what's the problem. That's it.
- Stock photos of people who aren't your team. Customers can tell.
- No prices anywhere. "Call for a quote" sends people to the competitor who said "from $149".
- Pop-ups, chat widgets and cookie banners on a five-page trade site.
- A blog with two posts from 2019. Either publish or remove the link.
